Gavin's Mushulu 14 (Australia)

Great to hear from Gavin again, having a blast with his family and his Mushulu 14 whilst on holidays.

He writes:

We just spent the 2.5 weeks down at Lakes Entrance with the family.  First time trying out the new engine, raised transom and retrofitted spray rails. 

Weather was great,  but to hot and not to cold. Very little rain. Tried the boat in some rough conditions,  certainly the roughest I've had the boat out in.  Felt perfectly safe the whole time.

Perfect boating location for a holiday for anybody  in Vic. Ran into Steve with his Sea Strike 18. Great to meet another builder in person.  All round a great holiday down by the beach.  If course,  wouldn't have been half a enjoyable without my boat.

Its great to see another launching recently, this time From Sam & Steve and their Mushulu 14
He writes:

Lads got her wet!!!! I’m so impressed with how she handled!

Mark, the interceptors were incredible. Got up on the plane so easy.

When running the engine in and not going over half throttle she was flying. Bout 15 knots. Then about 24 knots when I opened her up. So happy with the performance.

It was great to see yet another launching recently, this time From Gavin and his family from Melbourne and their Mushulu 14.

He writes:

Well, boat is officially splashed. Glad I went to a lake to try it as its the first time I've driven a boat. Took a little more getting used to than I thought it would.

Can't fault the boat. Felt rock solid and very safe. Plenty of room with 2 adults and 2 kids, or 3 adults all up.. Glad I chose this design.

This is why I built this boat. To share and enjoy with my family. I now consider her properly splashed. Some more photos to come but here is a couple. Thanks to Mark and his on going support and passion to see his builders succeed.

This is what happens when you're bending over to check the prop, your lifejacket decides to initiate emergency procedures and your daughter thinks its hilarious.

Headed out solo this morning before sunrise.

First solo launch and retrieval. So easy with this little boat. A bit of me time on the quite before the rest of the family woke up.

Boat is now blooded too.

Its great to see Gavin and his family enjoying their New Mushulu 14 that they built.

Tim's Mushulu 14 - Fun in the Sun (Australia)

 

Been a great summer of boating/fishing adventures with the M14 and family.

Yesterday out from Mordialloc Creek did some tubing with the kids. Esky strapped to front bulkhead with kmart $5 rod holder works well when in fishing mode.

The Mushulu 14 rows as good as can be expected for a 14ft planing hull. I have been enjoying rowing out across shallows and happy with the distance I can go without breaking a sweat. I made some 9 ft oars which seem to me to be about the right length. (You couldn't go less than 8ft).

A removable casting/lounging platform insert also for additional storage and maybe a custom cooler box forward of the middle seat would be a good idea and is something I may consider for a future project.

I don't really have experience with casting platforms, so couldn't tell you if forward stability is good enough for that purpose. It's a pretty stable boat and doing lots of different things like standing up fishing and pulling in anchor etc, I have never got the wobbles and never felt like I need to grab on to rebalance when at rest even in a reasonable swell.

Shane's Mushulu 14 (Australia)

 

Great to see another Mushulu 14 being splashed. This time from Shane in QLD

Launched my little boat a couple of days ago. Went very nicely with 4 of us on board. Went up onto a plane well. I got a 30hp Yamaha (I asked for the 25hp, but the 30hp was on special and actually $200 cheaper). My kids loved sitting up the front as we were planning.

Have since got a bimini and some rod holders and some railings to put on. Will take some video next time we are out, after Christmas.

I have had my Mushulu 14 for 7 years now and it has not missed a beat. Fishing, tubing, cruising, hitting abandoned oyster leases, and the boat is going as strong as ever. The only 2 things I have added to it is some shelves between the 2 seats, and just finished putting on spray rails,

Hi all,

Just had a successful splashing over the weekend!  

Properly launched my recently completed Mushulu 14 over the weekend, and I have to say, this thing is awesome!

As posted in the build thread, I worked flat stick through the Easter/ANZAC break to complete and splash the boat, but only narrowly managed to get it wet at the ramp for a water-test just before sunset on the last arvo of the holiday.

Was obviously totally psyched, but didn't get to get out of the creek, due to the wind blowing a gale, and the sun going down.

Mission accomplished however, as my aim was to get the hull in the water!

Unlucky for me, Melbourne decided to turn against its residents, in particularly boat builders keen on a nice launch day, and for the last fortnight the weather was terrible!

Gave me a chance to attach a bit of hardware etc, but was stinging to get out in it. Well, after a fortnight of Melbourne's finest lashing wind, rain and miserable skies, some good weather finally arrived!  After attending to a couple of Mother’s Day “duties”, the bay (Port Phillip) was as flat as a lake, so out we headed!

Well... this boat is absolutely awesome... bloody loving it! Leaps onto the plane and pumps out two perfect in-out ramps for wakeskate enjoyment.

Hanging to get out behind this beast and have a shred! YEEEEEEWWWW!!!!

Again, thanks to Mark and all the boat builders on the BMD forum, for providing great advice and help inspiring confidence on a daily basis!

And of course to the two trusting crew members, my girlfriend Jo and my sister Ali!
